Romania – Overview

Romania, with an area of 238,400 km² (92,047 mi²) and a total coastline of 225 km (139.8 mi), is situated in southeastern Central Europe, on the time zone GMT+2. Romania is one of the largest countries in Europe and the 83rd biggest in the world. More than half of all residents (54%) live within cities. Every tenth inhabitant lives in Bucharest alone.

Romania is comparatively low at an average elevation of 414 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Moldoveanu) is at 2,544 meters. There are direct national borders with the five neighboring countries Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine.
